Seasonal Guide Positions / Part Time

​

Job Description

​

Our guides offer fun and educational sea kayak tours out of Larrabee State Park. Tours are generally scheduled Thursday - Sunday. We offer 10 AM, 1 PM, Sunset and Bioluminescence Tours. Guides must have the ability to work long days in hot and sunny conditions. 

Familiarity with kayak rescue techniques, safety procedures, public speaking, strong communication skills, and guiding experience are strongly preferred.

We will be offering our guides the opportunity to become ACA Level 2 certified. Guides must commit to working for us for 2 seasons, and upon completion of the second season, we will reimburse for the cost of the certification. 

Responsibilities Include 

  • Providing safe, educational tours to customers

  • Educating the public about the marine mammals, birds, intertidal life, geology, ecology, and the natural and cultural history of area

  • Daily cleaning and occasional maintenance of kayaking equipment

  • Providing safety orientations prior to each tour

  • Driving kayaks to the boat launch daily 

  • Check-in guests and insure waivers are signed before debarking on tour

  • Making critical decisions on safety conditions and cancelling tours when conditions warrant

Job Requirements

  • CPR and First Aid Certified, minimum / WFR certification preferred

  • Completed BS or above in Ecology, Wildlife Biology, Environmental Science, or related field strongly preferred

  • Knowledge of San Juan archipelago/Salish Sea history as well as local marine and forest ecology

  • Valid driver’s license and clean driving record

  • Excellent customer service skills

  • Strong communication and public speaking skills

  • Self-motivated, enthusiastic, and strong work ethic

  • Flexibility and open to an often unpredictable schedule

  • Capable of working long hours in a physically challenging outdoor environment (expect long hours June-August)

  • ACA Level 2  (reimbursement offered)

  • Previous kayak guide experience strongly preferred

  • 2 Season commitment is strongly preferred

Seasonal Camp Counselor

Job Description

  • Plans, leads, and implements camp programs for children in cooperation with camp director

  • Provides high-quality educational and recreational opportunities and enjoyable experiences for camp participants

  • Supervises campers and ensures their safety, development, growth, skill achievement, and general well-being

  • Maintains a schedule for camp participants

  • Works with camp director to facilitate and create lesson plans for daily activities

  • Organizes and leads various small and large group activities

  • Ensures the cleanliness of the site

  • Assists in maintaining accurate program records, including incident reports, logbook documentation, and daily attendance

  • Knows and understands all emergency procedures associated with the camp program

  • Records and tracks camper’s dietary restrictions/allergies and ensures that the meals/snacks are distributed to them

  • Mediates any campers’ disputes

  • Knows, enforces, and follows all safety guidelines associated with the camp program, including knowing the whereabouts of your charges at all times

  • Maintains constant surveillance while on or around the water

Education / Experience Requirements 

​

  • Bachelors degree in early childhood education strongly preferred 

  • Experience in camp, youth programs, recreation, working with children, or in a related field

  • First AID and CPR certification minimum / WFR preferred

  • Lifeguard certification preferred

  • Must be a proficient kayaker and able to perform basic self rescue techniques
